1995-Present

Consultant on tankage, pressure vessels and piping for ExxonMobil, Chevron, Mobil, Texaco, Fluor-Daniel, Carmagen Engineering, Equilon (Shell Oil), Becht Engineering, Berger/Abam Engineers and the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority. Also acts as an expert witness for OSHA and legal firms such as Glidden Partners, Wyatt, Tarrant and Combs, Brown Sims and Reed, Smith, Hazel & Thomas.Teaching worldwide courses for the American Petroleum Institute (Introductory Training on API Tankage Standards 620, 650 and 653) and for the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (Repairs and Alterations of Pressure Vessels and Section VIII, Division 1, Design and Fabrication of Pressure Vessels).

1975 -1995

Senior Associate Engineer on pressure vessels, tanks, fluid solids units, refractory and thermal insulation. As one of the senior engineers in the group, handled many of the most difficult problems and was Mobil’s senior tank expert in the US for the last 10 years. Key accomplishments;

    • Bid review, purchase and design review of $110 million of LNG tanks for Qatar, reducing cost by $10 million with design revisions.
    • Design review and inspection of five 800,000 barrel LNG tanks for Indonesia.
    • Wrote or revised all Mobil Standards for vessels, tankage and thermal insulation for both refining/chemicals and exploration/production.
    • Gave worldwide training courses in pressure vessels, tankage and insulation and helped write the API Certified Tank Inspector examination.
    • Provided assessments and repair procedures for hundreds of vessels, tanks, heat exchangers and piping systems.
    • Reviewed and revised thousands of vessel and tank designs and drawings.
    • Modified tank inspection and maintenance, saving US Marketing $18 million.
    • Visited and qualified/rejected 100’s of fabricators and performed inspections.
    • Tankage inspections and environmental audits at all Mobil US refineries.
    • Specification, bid review, design review of most of Mobil’s refrigerated tanks.
    • Inspected and provided repair procedures for all US refinery fluid solids units. Assisted in developing a high temp. catalyst separator, patented by Mobil.
    • Received several Mobil awards for team contributions.

Senior Engineer in pressure vessels, piping, tankage, fluid solids units, refractory, and field experience with furnaces and boilers. Responsibilities;

    • Three years in worldwide refineries, chemical and gas plants during repairs, startups, operation and turnarounds.
    • Specification, bid review and design review of LNG tanks in Spain and Italy and refrigerated tanks worldwide.
    • Wrote and presented training courses on pressure vessels, piping and tanks.
    • Worked in Exxon’s London engineering office with European codes.
